Icelanders must comply with state institutions when choosing names for their children. There is a list of names to choose from in the country that are permitted by civil status registries, NOVA reports.
She observes that the names are consistent with tradition and the Icelandic language. A curious feature of the language is that the surname is formed by adding a suffix to the father's name according to the gender of the child – sson for boys and dottir for girls.
For example, if a man's name is Sigurdur, his son's surname will be Sigurdsson /son of Sigurdur/, and his daughter's surname will be Sigurdurdottir /daughter of Sigurdur/. However, this list is updated and enriched with names. For example, 11 new names were recently added, including the female Luna, Hofdis, Eilif and the male Kiran and Eiyar. It was allowed to baptize girls with the name Angelina, as long as the accent was on the letter “and“ according to the requirements of Icelandic grammar.
