Egyptian archaeologists discovered an ancient Roman necropolis and a bath near the Mediterranean city of Marsa Matruh, the Ministry of Tourism announced and the cultural monuments of Egypt, BTA reported.
The team led by Prof. Kotb Fauzi has found a tomb built like a catacomb, which consists of 29 niches. Its complex architectural plan includes a false door flanked by Doric columns and stairs that lead to the burial chambers.
In the tomb, scientists have come across glass vials, offering tables and the remains of statues, the most notable of which are the statues of a man in a Roman toga and a ram.
The expedition also discovered a well-preserved Roman bath with reception rooms, seating, a water tank and a sewage system.
The finds shed light on the importance of Marsa Matruh as a trading center in the Mediterranean in antiquity. Located about 240 kilometers from Alexandria, the city was an important port for transporting Egyptian grain to Rome.
