Deyan Donkov turned 50 - 1

I like to live without fear and without expectations. I believe in common sense that runs vertically. I believe that one is connected mentally to a much greater power than the one we think we serve here. And that's why I believe there is salvation.

The words of Deyan Donkov are from an interview he gave for BTA in 2022. On Tuesday, August 27, the actor celebrates a round anniversary, dariknews.bg reported.

As an artist, I think that with this contact – between viewer and actor, in the cinema and in the theater we can save souls, he says. “Each of my next roles is a challenge and I am always surprised by the new things I have to deal with. Professionally, there are always challenges and surprises. On a personal level – thank God my children and family are healthy. I try to enjoy the simple things, the little things also make me happy”, he adds.

Deyan Donkov was born on August 27, 1974 in Vidin. In 1997, he graduated in acting at NATFIZ "Krastyo Sarafov", in the class of Professor Encho Halachev and Snezhina Tankovska. He completed his master's degree under Professor Krikor Azarian.

He made his debut in the role of Solonius in “Three Sisters” by A. P. Chekhov, in the “Sofia“ theater. Over the years, he worked on the stages of "Bulgarian Army", "Behind the Channel", "Sfumato", "Revival", "Tear and Laughter", State Satirical Theater – in the productions “The Vain Efforts of Love” by William Shakespeare, “Love in Madagascar“ by Peter Turini, “One Love of Juan“ by Dostoyevsky and Pushkin, “Dangerous Liaisons” by Chauderlot de Laclos, “The Brothers Karamazov” after Dostoevsky, “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare, “Platonic“ by A.P. Chekhov. He has significant and successful roles on the stage of the "Bulgarian Army" Theater. in “Suburb“ by Eric Bogozian, “Powder Keg“ by Dejan Dukovski, “I am afraid of fleas” by Boyan Papazov, “Troil and Cressida” by William Shakespeare, “Meteor“ by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

„Sometimes I have this feeling that I am communicating with something of another order. And it is a truly divine feeling. I feel like I'm acting as a priest somehow at certain times... It gives meaning to the things that are done on stage. Otherwise, you just sit there and become a busybody on the stage, wondering where to put your hands... And we've seen it, and it sounds pretty ridiculous,” says the actor.

In 1999, he played the role of Valmon in the production “Dangerous Liaisons” and gets “Askeer“ for a rising star, after which over the years he was honored with three more “Askeer“ awards. He is the holder of the “Golden Rose” for the main male role for the film “Emigrants”, as well as two “Icarus“ for his participation in “Bay of fleas” and “Platonov“. He has also participated in film projects such as φ1.618“, “Sinking of Sozopol“, “The color of the chameleon“, “Karkitsi“.

Since 2003, he has been in the troupe of the National Theater “Ivan Vazov”, where his more significant roles are Belyaev in “Mesets na selo“ by Ivan Turgenev, Othello in “Othello” and Kent in “King Lear” by William Shakespeare, Don Juan in Moliere's play of the same name, The Mantis in “Beethoven 21” by Konstantin Iliev, Ivanov in “Ivanov“ and Lopakhin in “Cherry Garden“ by AP Chekhov, Cyrano in “Cyrano de Bergerac” by Edmond Rostan, Jean in “Miss Julia” by August Strindberg, Boril in “The Trial of the Bogomils“ by Stefan Tsanev, Hector Hashabai in “Home for broken hearts” by Bernard Shaw, McMurphy in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kissey, Caligula in “Caligula” by Albert Camus, Richard in “The Lover” by Harold Pinter, Dmitri Karamazov in “The Brothers Karamazov”.

„I personally was more involved in the National Theater for many years and this was my parallel reality. I played more intense, heavy roles, more often. In general, I often traveled in the world of the performance that was to be performed. This is my personal parallel reality. I can't say about the other artists. But as soon as they are engaged in art, they also have another world, an inner world, the imagination and all that is its expression. I miss my reality. So it happened that a lot of things are not played, not to say – almost everything we played. And it turned out to be quite painful... Because no one expected things to develop so abruptly. I even stopped asking myself questions, because somehow I saw that not only was the cause of COVID, but something else was happening in this theater. It is by no means beautiful, but if I were the director of some of the productions in which I play, I would probably take a more active interest in what is happening with my performances and why they are not played, Donkov commented in 2021.

Deyan Donkov has a son with actress Anastasia Ingilizova, who is named after his father – Deyan. His second son Hristo was born in 2016, and the third – Ioan, in 2021. The mother is the actress Radina Kardzhilova.
