The unsuccessful search and justice against the prosecutor's son Vasil Mihaylov is very reminiscent of the saga of the 36-month search for Gancho Vachkov-Ganetsa, which ended with his execution in Sofia in June 1999.
It is very likely that Ganetsa would not have been detained for many more years, as the Ministry of Interior and the prosecutor's office currently seem helpless in front of the prosecutor's son. But the 28-year-old man fell victim to a dangerous combination of unexpected betrayal by a close person and the obsession of the entire ministry to catch him - alive or dead.
The search for Gancho Vachkov began in the summer of 1996, when, arrested with an illegal gun, he managed to escape from the capital's First Police Station by jumping from a second-floor window. Like the prosecutor's son today, in those years Gancho had made the whole country a laughing stock. Together with Nikolay Zarev-Dankina, he was extremely unsuccessfully investigated for hundreds of armed robberies and car thefts in Sofia. They even attacked the jeep of the owner of the Central Department Store and the Plovdiv Fair, Georgi Gergov. Unfortunately for the elusive thieves, Gergov was not just the owner of a jeep, but the owner of a jeep who is also the godfather of the Minister of the Interior, Bogomil Bonev. So the ambition to arrest him was pressing the system from the highest level. Unlike the story with the prosecutor's son, in which there is nothing personal at the moment, the desire to see the Ghanaian in handcuffs was also shared by the police officers who were on his heels every day.
Even more motivated to catch the thief than the operatives from the "Search" sector were the employees of the secret Directorate for Operational Search (today DATO). For too long they failed in their attempts to track down Vachkov. He was extremely cautious, resourceful and a very good driver. Thus, he constantly eluded them and most of their reports ended with "...the subject ran a red light..." In combination with the pressure to arrest, the tension in the tracking service was constantly increasing. At the same time, due to the annoying failure, the services that were working operationally on Ganetsa were constantly changing - first the SDVR, then the BOP unit for the Sofia region, then the NSBOP, then again in the SDVR, and finally the national police. In the meantime, “Internal Security” captured three officers who warned the car thief about the actions - two anti-mafia and one from the police.
And so on until June 6, 1999, when a person very close to Ganetsa betrayed him that he would play football in the afternoon in the yard of the French High School in the center of Sofia. Contrary to the official versions, the thief was not accidentally caught at the intersection of “Patriarh Evtimiy” Blvd. with “Rakovski” St.. The police knew that he would kick there. That is why the berets from the Vrana squad were also waiting in the area. And so began a long chase under a shower of bullets on the streets of Sofia, which ended on the top floor of a cooperative on the quiet street "Murphy". The Berets carried away the handcuffed and unconscious Gancho Vachkov, who died 2 hours later in the "Pirogov" hospital besieged by the police. The official version was that the Ganetsa had shot himself in the head to avoid being captured. But everyone who read the case and counted the bullet holes in the stairs to his forehead knew that he had been shot by the Berets, who had not even been questioned about the case. It is no coincidence that 11 years later, Gancho Vachkov's parents condemned the state in Strasbourg for his murder. And that was the end of this very emotional story between a clever thief and a weak state that failed to convict and imprison him, as is done in the civilized world.
With the brazen attack on a police officer, while he is still being sought, the prosecutor's son Vasil Mihaylov, like Ganetsa, began to pour emotional energy into his relations with the state. This may well be a good incentive for the police and the prosecutor's office to work more effectively on his case. If they try harder, they might just find him in his bed, as happened with one of the Galevi brothers - alive or dead. Because in our country, as long as there is nothing personal or a special order, the state does not lift a finger.
The wanted man with a sentence that has already entered into force, Mihaylov, has no chance of reforming. He already has four convictions and one case in the pre-trial phase. He threatens not only his victims, but also guards and police officers. From now on, the lightest measure of deterrence "submission" is as inadequate for him as a suspended sentence.
And excessively sudden movements can become dangerous not only for others, but also for him…
