US President Donald Trump and the EU - represented by Ursula von der Leyen - have reached a deal. Everyone seems happy, but the Americans much more so. In general, the deal introduces 4 times higher tariffs on imports of European goods into the US than before Trump was elected. The deal includes European payments to the US worth $750 billion for energy and increased investments worth $600 billion. So far, what does the EU get... Probably just the right to become the 51st US state, because then it will stop paying tariffs. Trump wanted Canada as the 51st state because they are on the border, but they are unlikely to become one.
It is clear that the tariffs will be paid by American citizens, and European companies will lose market share. They also have the option to move to the States, of course.
Will we buy Russian gas from the US
The deal includes European payments to the US worth $750 billion for energy. The US mainly exports liquefied gas, but a number of analysts say that there is no $750 billion worth of gas in the US. But… Why not buy cheap Russian, which the EU gave up in order to sell it at triple the price in Europe!? (note – the price is such if we compare it with the one we had via the pipe from Russia to the gas hub in Texas). Trump and Putin are talking about why they shouldn't also sign a gas deal.
The US is planning to flood the European market with cars, and EU cars are becoming more expensive on the American market. Why should Americans buy them then? The so-called trade deal is more than humiliating and shameful for the European Commission and Ursula von der Leyen. The EC simply accepted without complaint that a country has the right to unilaterally violate international law. So what's the difference with Russia? Some are using military means, others are using pens, sorry about tariffs...
The EC did not propose in its package for the new EU Budget a tax on US digital concerns, for which we create the profit because we create the content for them.
Ursula von der Leyen
The uncomplaining Ursula von der Leyen simply signed the deal because she needed media attention and action to show that she was at some level. She needs a good public image because the European Union's court has dealt a blow to the EC's image after ruling that the institution had broken the law by refusing to provide access to text messages between President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the Covid pandemic. The case has already been dubbed "Pfizergate". Von der Leyen is therefore facing increasing pressure to explain why the communication with Pfizer was hidden, since it concerns a contract worth over 35 billion euros.
And because she needs a public image, Ursula went to Trump's golf residence to say "thank you" for imposing tariffs on us. And where is the EU… Even the smallest state in the US by area - Rhode Island, has its own federal government within the framework of the large jurisdiction, it has the right to determine many things itself and to create its own laws. And what did the EU do…just nothing.
Canada unlikely, but EU may become 51st US state
