Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said on Friday that the government in Madrid supports the European Commission's efforts to use frozen Russian assets in the EU to finance Ukraine, Reuters reports, quoted by BTA.
„From Spain, we have always declared ourselves in favor of maximizing funding for Ukraine. "We insist that creative ways of using these blocked assets be considered," Cuerpo said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
The minister stressed that Spain, as one of the main importers of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the EU, is actively working to reduce these imports and diversify energy supplies, citing the United States as an alternative source.
The statement comes amid growing discussions in the EU about how frozen Russian assets could help Ukraine, whose external financing needs remain critical after almost three years of war.
