European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Sanae Takaichi, who became Japan's first female prime minister, saying that she was “making history“, reports Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
“You are making history by becoming Japan's first female prime minister. I look forward to working closely with you to deepen the unique partnership between the European Union and Japan“, von der Leyen wrote on the social network Ex.
Today, the Japanese parliament officially elected 64-year-old Takaichi as prime minister. The leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, who was previously the interior minister responsible for economic security, won 237 votes in the 465-seat House of Representatives.
On the eve of the vote, Takaichi concluded a coalition agreement with the Japan Restoration Party, strengthening the position of his new government.
