NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will arrive in Washington today for a two-day visit, where he will meet with US President Donald Trump, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA, citing his team.
Rutte and Trump will discuss "several issues related to NATO support for Ukraine and US efforts for lasting peace", an alliance official told AFP.
The NATO secretary-general has long cultivated his relationship with the US president to gain influence on "hot issues" like the war in Ukraine, notes Agence France-Presse.
European leaders fear reaching an agreement to the detriment of Ukraine and the security of Europe as a whole.
Their concerns intensified after the meeting between the US president and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday, AFP reports. According to a senior Ukrainian official, Trump pressured Zelensky to cede all of Donbas to Russia.
European leaders continue to call for increased pressure on Russia, including from the US, whose president has so far refused to tighten sanctions against it.
