In Rome, over 200,000 people took part in the national march – a rally in defense of democracy and labor. It was organized by Italy's largest and most historic trade union, the “General Italian Confederation of Labor“ (GIGL).

The rally took place in Piazza “San Giovanni“. Its slogan was “Democracy in Action” brought together all the pressing issues from health and education to wages and pensions, from the fight against poverty to achieving world peace and against rearmament.

On the issue of freedom of the press, RAI journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, who was threatened with an attack in front of his home last week, was invited.

A delegation from the Democratic Party, as well as representatives of other opposition parties, participated in the event.

It was pointed out that the government's draft budget plan is wrong not only regarding wages. Asked by journalists about it, CIGL Secretary General Maurizio Landini replied: “Today we want to show that there is a very important part of this country, as has been seen in recent weeks, which is taking to the streets and demanding change. If they don't listen to us and if the parliament and the government don't agree to radically change the law that we consider wrong, our protest activity will not end here, if things don't change." Landini described today as a wonderful day and thanked all the participants.
