Chen Li-won, the new leader of Taiwan's main opposition party - "Kuomintang", told Deutsche Wellethat NATO's expansion eastward is the main reason for the conflict in Ukraine.

The politician is due to take office as leader of Asia's oldest party on November 1.

„NATO promised Russia not to expand eastward, but repeatedly broke this and eventually reached Russia's borders. This is the main reason for the conflict in Ukraine“, said Chen Li-wun.

She stressed that if NATO countries had abandoned their plans to join Ukraine, “this problem would not have arisen“.

Chen Li-wun objected to a reporter who, in a question, called Russia a dictatorship. “Russia has been democratizing for many years. There is no perfect democracy in the world; even American democracy today has many problems that require reform. But Putin is a democratically elected president“, the politician noted.

She called for a “pragmatic solution“ to international disputes. "If everyone insists on their own political demands or political propaganda, many issues will be impossible to resolve and everyone will just talk without paying attention to each other," she added.

Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang, led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975), retreated to the island after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. The Kuomintang is an opposition party, while the ruling party on the island is the Democratic Progressive Party. According to Beijing's official position, Taiwan is one of China's regions.
