About 40 pro-Palestinian activists broke into the main building of the Technical University of Munich, where they lit fireworks on the roof and unfurled a banner, DPA reported, citing local police, BTA reports.
The protesters remained on the roof for almost two hours and left the building only after the university warned them of the possibility of filing a complaint for illegal entry. The walls of the university were scrawled with political slogans.
The management of the educational institution announced that it would file a complaint for property damage and emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated. "There is no place for anti-Semitism at the university," the institution said.
The action was presented as a protest against "the Technical University of Munich's participation in genocide, occupation and apartheid." According to the protesters, the university has collaborated with Israeli companies in weapons research.
Earlier in the day, around 500 people took part in a demonstration in the center of Munich, guarded by around 100 police officers.
The Bavarian Commissioner for Anti-Semitism, Ludwig Spönle, said that criticism of the Israeli government was permissible, but "defamation of German scientific institutions is unacceptable." He called the allegations that the university was "complicit in the suffering of the people of Gaza" "a vile and baseless slander."
The activists cited a July report by the UN Human Rights Council that found the Technical University of Munich had partnerships with Israeli military and technology companies. Israel described the findings as "biased."
