At least seven people were killed and 27 others injured last night when a large pile of confiscated explosives detonated at a police station in Indian Kashmir, local television NDTV reported, quoted by Reuters.

Most of the dead were police officers and forensic scientists who were examining explosives stored at the police station.

The death toll could rise as five of the injured are in critical condition, NDTV reported.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the cause of the blast, and local police did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.

Local police had earlier told Reuters that the explosion was caused a fire at the Nowgam police station.

The incident comes four days after a deadly car bomb explosion in Delhi killed at least eight people and was categorized by Indian authorities as a terrorist act.
