The Skopje City Council has adopted a decision prohibiting the disposal of household waste in containers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Citizens who do not comply with the decision will be fined 50 euros, North Macedonian media reported.
The decision aims to introduce a legal framework that will help the public company “Communal Hygiene“, and inspection services will monitor the implementation of the measure, which can be corrected if it proves inappropriate, and during the first few months, citizens will not be fined, but warnings will be issued.
“The garbage collection schedule ends in 22:00, when the containers are emptied. If the containers are full after 22:00, they will be full all night and the next day, because they are not emptied during the day. It is not possible to clean and collect garbage when there is a large crowd or traffic in the city“, the media quoted a statement from the Skopje administration, adding that the councilors from Levica voted against this decision, describing it as scandalous.
Before the local elections in North Macedonia, Skopje was littered with overflowing containers that were not emptied for days and there were small dumps around them. With the inauguration of the new mayor of the capital of North Macedonia, Orce Georgievski, a large-scale cleaning of the city was organized within 78 hours.
