Venezuela categorically rejects the public statement by US President Donald Trump, in which he “attempts to extraterritorially impose illegal jurisdiction of the United States in Venezuela“, the country's Foreign Ministry said.

Trump had previously stated that the airspace over and near Venezuela was closed.

“Such a statement represents a hostile, unilateral and arbitrary act, incompatible with the fundamental principles of international law and part of a constant policy of aggression against our country, which asserts colonial claims over our region of Latin America and the Caribbean and rejects international law“, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement works.

Venezuela declares to the world that such statements constitute a “clear threat of the use of force, which is clearly and unequivocally prohibited by Article 2, paragraph 4 of the Charter of the United Nations“, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

Article 2, paragraph 4 reads: Article 2 of the Charter of the United Nations states that all Members of the organization “refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner“ inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

It is also noted that the United States, through its “attempt at intimidation“, violates Article 1 of the Charter of the United Nations, which proclaims the maintenance of international peace and security as one of the fundamental purposes of the organization.

Venezuela demands unconditionally respect for its airspace, protected by the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization and confirmed by the 1944 Chicago Convention, Article 1 of which categorically recognizes that “every state has exclusive and absolute sovereignty over the airspace above its territory“, is emphasized in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We call on the international community, the sovereign governments of the world, the United Nations and relevant international organizations to categorically condemn this immoral act of aggression, which poses a threat to the sovereignty and security of our homeland, the Caribbean and the northern part of South America“, the statement of the department says.
