A German opposition party proposes that the possibility of Europe resuming Russian gas supplies, which were suspended after the start of the war in Ukraine, be discussed within the framework of the current peace talks between Washington, Moscow and Kiev, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
The chairman of the “Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason“ Fabio de Masi said that it would be a “meaningful political move” for Europe to offer Russian President Vladimir Putin the resumption of gas supplies as an element of a future ceasefire. According to him, this would allow European countries to once again take a seat at the negotiating table. He stressed that Germany remains heavily dependent on cheap energy imports.
De Masi made his statement during a party conference of the formation, which until recently bore the name “Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance“. The party failed to overcome the 5 percent barrier to enter the Bundestag in the February elections. It is known for its critical positions on NATO and is often described as more favorable to Russia.
At the same time, De Masi rejected accusations that the party takes an uncritical position towards Moscow. He stressed that the formation condemned Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure and described the war as a “great catastrophe”, although he added that in his opinion the conflict was inevitable.
Initially, the party bore the name of its founder Sarah Wagenknecht, one of the recognizable figures on the left-wing political spectrum in Germany. After her resignation from the presidency, however, it was renamed the “Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason“, while retaining the abbreviation BSW.
