Spain is in three days of mourning in memory of the victims of the train crash in Andalusia. The number of deaths has reached 40 people, the injured are over 150. 41 people are hospitalized - 37 adults and 4 children. 12 of them are in intensive care.
Two investigations - judicial and technical - are looking for the cause of the tragedy, which took place on Sunday evening in the area of the town of Adamus on the Madrid-Seville line. One of the initial theories is that the rails broke, although it is still unclear whether this was the cause or the consequence of the derailment of the Iryo high-speed train.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente said that the rail breakage was not limited to one specific spot. He said there were many more breaks in a 200- or 300-meter section of the track. At the same time, he stressed that twenty minutes before the train accident, three trains had passed along the same track without any incidents being recorded.
The section where the fatal accident occurred is part of the Madrid-Seville corridor, the oldest in the high-speed rail network, opened in 1992. The latest renovation of the route, worth 700 million euros, was completed in May 2025.
High-speed train traffic between Madrid and Andalusia is expected to be restored no earlier than February 2.
