The Syrian army announced that, after coordination with the US, it has taken control of the "Ash Shadadi" military base in Hasaka province, northeastern Syria, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported today, quoted by Reuters and BTA agencies.
This step follows the withdrawal of the US from the strategic "Al Tanf" base as a result of a deal brokered by Washington for the integration of the Kurdish-led military coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), into central Syrian institutions, Reuters recalls.
In April last year, the US began a gradual withdrawal of military personnel and military equipment from the base in the town of Ash Shadadi, which was under the control of the SDF. At the end of January, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Kurdish coalition commander Mazloum Abdi reached an agreement according to which Kurdish fighters would join government forces, and the self-government institutions established by the Kurds in northeastern Syria would become part of Syrian state structures, TASS also notes.
