US begins airlift of military equipment to Nigeria - 1

The US has begun airlifting military supplies to northeastern Nigeria, where a battle against terrorist groups is underway, Vanguard newspaper reports.

At least three military transport planes have delivered a shipment of equipment, including ammunition, to a Nigerian military base in Borno state. According to the newspaper, these are just the first of a series of such flights. “As a result of the negotiations between Nigeria and the US, the US government will not only send us military personnel, but will also provide the necessary logistical support, including supplies of ammunition, to combat the insurgents“, the newspaper quoted its source from the General Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

It was previously reported that the US will send 200 soldiers to fight terrorism in Nigeria. According to the representative of the Ministry of Defense of the West African country, Major General Samaila Uba, they will train their Nigerian colleagues and will not participate in hostilities. Observers note that the US plans to establish a base for its reconnaissance military drones in northeastern Nigeria to monitor the situation in the Sahel zone, after losing such a base in neighboring Niger.

Since December 2025, the Nigerian and US armed forces have carried out several joint strikes on extremist targets in Nigeria, as a result of which planned terrorist attacks in four states of the African country - Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger and Katsina - were thwarted. The spokesman for the Nigerian Foreign Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spoke about Nigeria's strategic engagement with the United States in sharing intelligence and other forms of cooperation.

We are talking about the fight against the Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP, part of the Islamic State group, banned in the Russian Federation). Boko Haram terrorists began operating in Nigeria in 2009, and then in Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. In 2015, the Nigerian armed forces inflicted a major defeat on the group and significantly reduced the territory under its control. In 2024, Nigeria ranked sixth in the world in terms of the number of terrorist attacks.
