Iran, Russia hold joint naval drills amid US threats - 1

Iran and Russia held joint naval drills in the Gulf of Oman in the northern Indian Ocean today amid rising tensions in the region, DPA reported, citing Iranian news agency ISNA, BTA reported.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also participated in the drills off Iran's southern coast, the statement said.

In recent weeks, the United States has repeatedly raised the possibility of renewed military action against Iran, despite the second round of indirect talks on Tehran's nuclear program taking place in Switzerland this week.

The IRGC's naval forces already held military drills in the northwestern part of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, firing missiles at targets in the Gulf to show readiness for possible attacks by the United States.

Parts of the strait - one of the most important international sea lanes - were closed to shipping for several hours earlier this week for security reasons.

Analysts see the current exercises as a show of force by Tehran, with Moscow's support likely intended to act as a deterrent. Missile tests are also scheduled for today in several southern parts of the country.
