Around 5,000 people gathered in Marburg (Hesse province) to demonstrate against the German government's social policy, the Welt television channel reported.

According to the channel, the protest took place on the occasion of a meeting of the workers' wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the city, which was attended by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The demonstration was initiated by the Left Party and other left-wing organizations, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) and the largest trade unions in Germany - IG Metall and Verdi. They opposed the government's planned cuts in the social sector.

Some of the demonstrators carried posters with slogans directed personally at the chancellor. The march started near Marburg's main train station and ended in front of the building where the CDU event was being held.

The demonstrators threw paint at the facade of the building.
