Washington Mayor: Suspected shooter being treated at local hospital, not injured by gunfire VIDEO - 1

The suspected shooter who attacked a checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner is being treated at a local hospital, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

He was not injured by a gunfire but is being evaluated, said Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey W. Carroll.

A Secret Service agent was injured and also being treated at a local hospital, according to Bowser.

The gunman arrested at the White House Correspondents' Dinner will face two charges, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro: use of a firearm during a felony involving violence and assault on a federal employee with a dangerous weapon.

Jeffrey W. Carroll said it was "likely part of the investigation" into who the shooter, arrested at a checkpoint during the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Hilton Hotel, was targeting.

"We know the president was in the ballroom," he said after the incident. “We know there were cabinet members there and a lot of guests.“

“At this point, it appears that the suspect is a lone performer, a lone shooter,“ Carroll added.“

Police believe the suspect opened fire based on “preliminary information“. “This shows that our multi-layered defenses are working.“

A Secret Service agent was shot in his protective gear and is hospitalized, sources told CNN.

“I ask everyone to pray for him and for all of our officers and agents who were involved,“ Curran said. “I will tell you that we will continue the mission.“

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said authorities “have no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved“ in the incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner tonight.
