Palestine asked to become a member of the United Nations - 1

The Palestinian Authority has once again requested to become a full member of the United Nations (UN), according to a letter addressed to Secretary General Antonio Guterres, DPA reported, BTA reported.

"Today, the State of Palestine, on the instructions of the Palestinian leadership, sent a letter [to] the Secretary General with a request to renew the consideration of [our] application for membership," said a post on the “X“ social network. from the permanent mission of Palestine as an observer to the United Nations.

The publication included a letter signed by Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour, requesting that the 2011 Palestinian application for full membership be resubmitted to the Security Council in April.

In September 2011, the Palestinian Authority applied for full UN membership, but failed to muster the necessary nine votes to be admitted to the powerful 15-nation Security Council. The US threatened to veto the request.

The US and other Western powers had warned that UN recognition of a Palestinian state would nullify previous agreements that supported talks between Israel and the Palestinians to create a Palestinian state to live in peace alongside Israel.

In 2012, the UN General Assembly voted 138 to 9 with 41 abstentions to grant Palestine "non-UN observer status", despite US opposition. Of the 193 UN member states, 139 have so far recognized Palestine as an independent state. The USA and Germany are not among them.
