The US will continue to be "strong and committed" an ally of the other countries in the alliance, regardless of the election of the American president in November this year, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured, Reuters and BTA reported.
"The United States will remain a strong and loyal ally,", Stoltenberg said at a joint press conference in the Polish capital Warsaw with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Former US President Donald Trump, who is now a contender for the Republican Party's presidential nomination for the fall elections, made a statement at a campaign rally in the state of South Carolina in early February that caused concern among a number of NATO member countries at the prospect of him returning to the White House.
Trump then said that, as President of the United States, he had told a head of state of a NATO country that was reluctant to increase government defense spending that in such a case he would not only not defend the country in question under of the Alliance agreement in the event of an attack by Russia, but would also "encourage" Russian President Vladimir Putin "to do whatever he wants".
The main rival of Trump in the elections in November is the current president of the USA - Democrat Joe Biden.
