The Spanish Ministry of Culture has decided to remove the national prize for tauromachia (bullfighting), reported the agency EFE< span>. In 2024, the award, which provides a reward of 30 thousand euros, will no longer be awarded. The Ministry of Culture is headed by a representative of the left-wing coalition "Sumar". Ernest Urtasun, who is critical of such spectacles.
The award was established in 2011 and was awarded for the first time in 2013 to bullfighter Francisco Manuel Ojeda Gonzalez. The prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations for their work in the protection and promotion of bullfighting as an object of cultural interest.
In Spain various shows and celebrations are held with the participation of bulls. Bullfighting is a traditional Spanish spectacle and is a fight between a bullfighter and a bull, after which the animal is usually killed.
In 2013, Spain's Senate (the upper house of parliament) approved, with the votes of representatives of the conservative Popular Party, a law that recognizes the art of bullfighting as the country's cultural heritage. The decision was intended to protect this type of performance from the attempts of some political forces and part of the public to achieve a ban on bullfighting as a spectacle incompatible with ethics and morality.
