The Executive Director of the UN World Food Program, Cindy McCain, in an interview with NBC, called the food supply situation in the northern part of the Gaza Strip a full-scale famine. “I can explain to you that there is hunger – complete hunger – to the north and he's moving south”, she said.
McCain stressed that while there is no official announcement of a famine yet, based on what her organization's staff have seen and experienced on the ground, there is an incredible food problem in Gaza. McCain also expressed hope for a ceasefire that would allow the population to receive food much faster.
At the end of April, the international humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen, which provided food to the population, resumed work in the Gaza Strip, a month after seven of its employees were killed in an Israeli military strike.
Israel and Hamas are currently negotiating through mediators a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages there.
