The head of the EU diplomatic service, Josep Borrell, actually blamed right-wing extremists for the attack in Dresden on the MEP Matthias Ecke of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
„I categorically condemn the attack against Mathias Eke. We have witnessed unacceptable episodes of persecution of political representatives and the rise of far-right extremism, which reminds us of the dark times of the past: this should neither be tolerated nor underestimated. We must all defend democracy”, Borrell wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Earlier, the Saxon branch of the Social Democrats said that the 41-year-old politician was attacked while putting up campaign posters in the street. He was seriously injured and required surgery. There is no official information about the attackers. The SPD in its press release linked this situation to “sowing hatred” from the "Alternative for Germany" party in Germany and right-wing extremists.
Police have launched an investigation, but there are no arrests or suspects at this time.
Elections for the European Parliament will be held in the EU countries from June 6 to 9.
