A group of armed thieves stole jewelry from a high-end store near the world-famous “Champs Elysée“ in Paris before fleeing on motorcycles, a police source said, dariknews.bg reported.
The three-man team, one of whom was armed with a long-barreled weapon, made off with loot worth several million euros in a heist similar to the double heist at the same Harry Winston jeweler in 2007 and 2008.
A gunshot was heard outside the store, said a police source, who said the robbery happened around 11:45 a.m. It was a "warning shot" and "no injuries," added the source familiar with the case. Paris prosecutors announced that an investigation is underway.
The source said it could be "several days" before the exact value of the heist is known. In the 2007-08 case, 900 items worth a total of €78.9 million were stolen in one of the largest such heists in the world. In 2015, a Paris court sentenced eight men to prison terms of 9 months to 15 years for the robbery.
The violent scenes in central Paris came days after an armed gang freed a prisoner from a prison convoy in northern France, killing two guards. Finding and catching the fugitives is a top priority for the government as it seeks to show it has a serious commitment to public order ahead of June's European elections and the July-August Olympics.
