The Houthis announced that they attacked several ships off the coast of Yemen, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.
The attacks were in response to an Israeli military operation in the southernmost Gaza Strip town of Rafah, the Iran-linked group said.
Among the vessels attacked is the bulk carrier "Laax" (Laax). Owned by a Greek company and flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, it was hit by three missiles the day before yesterday, the US military said.
The ship sustained damage but continued on its way.
The Houthis began attacking ships in the strategic area, through which 12 percent of world trade passes, they say, in response to a military operation that Israel launched in the Gaza Strip after an attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" on October 7, AFP notes. In December, the United States, a close Israeli ally, set up an international force to protect shipping in the Red Sea, and the following month, along with Britain, it began striking targets of the Iran-linked group, which controls large parts of Yemen. However, this did not stop the Houthis, who continued to attack vessels.
