Berlin's aim is to avoid direct consultations with the Taliban

The German government is in talks with Uzbekistan to open the possibility of deportations from Germany to Afghanistan without direct consultations with the Taliban, reported the German magazine "Spiegel", quoted by BTA.

On this occasion, at the end of May, a delegation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs was in Tashkent, the publication reported, without specifying its sources.

The delegation has proposed to the Uzbek government that Afghans in Germany who are subject to deportation be sent to Tashkent. From there, they will be transported to Kabul by the private airline CamAir, the magazine writes.

For the time being, the German Ministry of the Interior has not commented on the matter.

Earlier this month, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said Germany was considering deporting Afghan migrants who pose a security threat back to Afghanistan. She made the remarks after the deadly attack on a police officer, which has prompted calls for a tougher approach to immigration.

Such a move would be controversial, as Germany does not deport people to countries where their lives are at risk, Reuters notes. It stopped carrying out deportations to Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power there in 2021.

The Uzbek government wants to sign an official agreement with Germany in the field of migration before reaching a deal on deportations, writes "Spiegel". This agreement should regulate the posting of skilled Uzbek workers to Germany. According to the publication, Berlin's special representative on migration agreements will travel to Uzbekistan next week.
