French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a "heavy and indisputable defeat" in the French elections, said the leader of the far-left party "Disobedient France" Jean-Luc Mélenchon, quoted by AFP, reported BTA.

In today's first round of parliamentary elections in the country, the presidential majority remained in third place after the "National Assembly" party. and the "New Popular Front" coalition, in which "Rebellious France" participates.

"We have seven days to save France from a catastrophe", declared the MEP from the left Raphael Glucksmann in turn, referring to the possibility of a "National Assembly" to win the second round on July 7.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for "great unity" against the extreme right in the second round of early parliamentary elections in France in a week, France Press reported.

Macron made his appeal after exit polls showed the party "National Assembly" leads convincingly in today's first round of the elections.

The early vote was called by the president following the victory of the far-right formation in the European Parliament elections in the country earlier this month. The decision was interpreted by analysts as a risky political bet.

"The high turnout in the first round... testifies to the importance of this vote for all our compatriots and to a desire to clarify the political situation," Macron said in a written statement. "Faced with the "National Assembly", the time has come for a large, clear democratic and republican unification for the second round," he urged.
