A man who approached a police station in Belgrade with a backpack containing a crossbow was was arrested last night, two days after the attack with this weapon in front of the Israeli embassy, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA, citing a statement by the Serbian police.
The man crossed the barrier in front of the police station and, after being ordered to stop, began to walk away quickly. After that, the police caught up with him and searched him.
"In his backpack were found a crossbow with seven arrows, several knives and a pot containing pirates. "We are investigating his motives and a search of his apartment is currently underway," police said, adding that the man was not "on the extremist list".
According to the police, the man claimed that he was "pursued by the mafia and the secret services".
"A medical examination will be carried out and the prosecutor will decide what action to take," said Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic.
Serbia has been on high alert since Saturday, following the attack outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, where a police officer on duty was shot in the neck with a crossbow. He returned fire and fatally wounded his assailant.
Dacic described the attack as a "heinous act of terrorism". The attacker was identified by authorities as a "convert to Islam" born in 1999 in Serbia. His wife, who is currently in Montenegro, was questioned by the police at the request of Serbia, reports AFP.
