China to NATO: Don't create chaos in Asia like in Europe - 1

China accused NATO of seeking security at the expense of others and told the Alliance not to bring the same "chaos" to Asia as it has done in Europe, the AP reported, quoted by News.bg.

The Foreign Ministry statement comes a day after NATO identified China as a "decisive factor" in Russia's war against Ukraine and amid strengthening ties between Alliance members and Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a briefing that it was unwise for NATO to shift responsibility for the Ukraine issue to China because "it has sinister motives" and stressed that China has a fair and objective position on the Ukrainian issue.

In a statement, NATO said that China had become a factor in the war through its "boundless partnership" with Russia and its large-scale support for the Russian defense industrial base.

Lin said that China's trade with Russia is legal and reasonable and based on World Trade Organization rules. He said that "so-called security" NATO's expansion comes at the expense of the security of other countries.

Beijing has expressed concern about NATO's nascent relationship with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea have sent their leaders or deputies to this week's NATO summit in Washington.

"China calls on NATO... to stop interfering in the country's internal politics and tarnishing China's image and not to create chaos in the Asia-Pacific region after creating turmoil in Europe," Lin stressed.

This week, Chinese troops arrived in Belarus for joint exercises, near the Polish border. The foreign ministry spokesman described the joint training as a normal military operation that is not targeting a specific country.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a meeting of leaders or senior officials from the 10 SCO countries in Kazakhstan, where Putin reiterated his demand that Ukraine withdraw its troops from parts of the country occupied by Russian forces. Ukraine has firmly rejected this, as well as a Chinese peace proposal, which does not mention the return of Ukrainian territory to the government in Kiev.
