Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said the party will nominate a presidential candidate by August 7 through virtual voting and commits to "open and honest“ nomination process, reported Reuters.

Earlier yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris quickly solidified support for her presidential bid and secured commitments from hundreds of congressional delegates, BTA recalls.

Harrison pointed out that if just one politician, such as Kamala Harris, secured the support of at least 300 of the 4,600 delegates at the upcoming Democratic convention, the vote would take place as early as August 1. If there are several such contenders, voting will begin a few days later, but will have to end by August 7.

Nominating a presidential candidate through virtual voting ahead of the party's Aug. 19-22 convention in Chicago, Illinois, will turn the convention into a purely ceremonial event, the "New York Times" points out.

"I want to assure you that we are committed to an open and fair nominating process,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison told reporters on a conference call.

„The work ahead may be unprecedented, but we are ready to undertake a transparent, swift and organized process to move forward as a united Democratic Party.“
