An activist of Iranian Kurdish origin was executed in Iran after almost 15 years in prison, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.
Kamran Sheikhe was arrested in the fall of 2009 and accused of endangering national security and propaganda against the Islamic system, the "Iranwire" news site reported today. He was hanged in a prison in the northwestern city of Mahabad, the site added. The information is also supported by other Iranian media abroad.
So far, the Iranian judicial system has not commented on the execution.
According to the human rights organization "Amnesty International" the executed was tortured to force him to confess his guilt.
Human rights organizations have been criticizing executions in Iran for decades. According to "Amnesty International" data; 853 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest number since 2015.
International criticism of the executions intensified following mass protests and the women's movement in the fall of 2022. At least nine people are known to have been executed in connection with the demonstrations.
The death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who died at the hands of the morality police after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes, sparked nationwide protests against the Islamic system of government in 2022.
