The Panamanian authorities yesterday broke a network for trafficking Chinese migrants through the Darien jungle, reported France Presse , quoted by BTA, referring to the Panamanian prosecutor's office.
It is about the trafficking of migrants whose ultimate goal is the United States.
"So far we have arrested 15 people linked to migrant trafficking," said Emeldo Marquez, a prosecutor dealing with the fight against organized crime.
All those detained are Panamanians who are part of an organization "dedicated to the trafficking of migrants of various nationalities, in particular Chinese,", explained Marquez.
The arrests were made in the city of Santa Fe, which is located in the province of Darien - a region that borders Colombia and through which thousands of migrants who want to reach the United States pass.
In 2023, more than half a million migrants passed through the Darien jungle.
Since the beginning of this year, more than 220 thousand people have passed through it. These are mainly Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, Colombians, Haitians and Chinese.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 12 thousand Chinese have passed through the jungle, according to Panamanian authorities.
