Greece is facing severe water shortages that affect both its islands and its mainland part, reports the electronic edition of the newspaper “Kathimerini“.
The Aegean Greek island of Serifos is already in a water emergency for the fourth month in a row, reports the Greek state television ERT.
The northern Aegean island of Thassos has started drilling new wells to meet water needs, and the Dodecanese island of Agathonisi continues to use its two desalination plants despite high costs. Platanias in Chania, Crete, is also in a state of alarm due to irrigation needs.
The municipality of Poligiros in the Central Macedonia region called on its residents and visitors to save water and avoid actions that would lead to its wastage, such as washing alleys, streets and cars. The water is also not enough for the needs of agriculture and horticulture.
Scientists recommend more economically efficient and environmentally friendly solutions to the crisis. At least 14 districts in the country are in a state of emergency.
