The heads of two centers for conscripts near the Ukrainian capital Kiev were detained for accepting bribes in exchange for exemption from conscription, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, referring to the news site "Ukrainska Pravda".< /p>
According to the publication, when offices and apartments were searched in the Kyiv suburbs of Bucha and Boryspol, wads of money were found and confiscated.
The heads of the two centers for recruiting military personnel and their accomplices have so far collected a total of about 1 million dollars for their services, states "Ukrainska Pravda". The investigation indicated that the managers of the recruitment centers forged medical certificates declaring the young men unfit for military service, thus excluding them from further registration for the armed forces.
So far, 20 conscripts have been identified who allegedly tried to use this method to avoid military service. Many of the young Ukrainians also try to simply cross the border to neighboring countries. Due to the increased checks, the trafficking gangs are now looking for new ways to transfer the fugitive conscripts abroad - mainly to Romania - for significant sums of money.
