Floods kill two women in Connecticut after torrential rains destroy roads and down trees, rescuers called to take some of the victims out of the waters by boat, officials said, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA..

Rains over the weekend caused major flooding in western Connecticut and turned the Little River into a deadly river in the town of Oxford, about 40 miles southwest of Hartford.

In two separate incidents Sunday, one woman died in her car and the other died while trying to hold on to a sign, Oxford Fire Chief Scott Pelletier said at a news conference.

In both cases, firefighters were on the scene trying to rescue the women when the victims were swept away by floodwaters, Pelletier said.

Governor Ned Lamont, who called the storm "historic", declared a state of emergency to speed up the state's recovery.

"It's just a reminder that we have to stick together at a time like this,” Lamont said.

The media, citing police, identified the women as Ethelyn Joyner, 65, and Audrey Rostkowski, 71.

Their bodies were found yesterday.

State police were able to rescue by boat an unspecified number of people stranded in two separate locations.
