German police have arrested the man suspected of carrying out the knife attack on Friday evening in the western German city of Solingen, in which three people died and eight others were injured, Reuters reported, referring to the German newspaper “Spiegel”, BTA reported.

The interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Solingen is located, Herbert Reuhl, told AER De television that police had arrested the "real suspect" in connection with the attack.

Meanwhile, German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck spoke out in favor of stricter gun laws after the deadly attack, DPA reported.

„We don't know if the terrible crime in Solingen would have been prevented with stricter laws,”, Habeck said, but according to him it would be right and necessary to introduce certain restrictions on gun ownership.

„More gun-free zones and stricter gun laws – no one in Germany needs cutting and stabbing weapons in public. "We are no longer living in the Middle Ages," Habek said.

Habeck, from the Green Party, is among several German political leaders who have called for stricter gun rules in the wake of Friday night's attack, which left three people dead and several others injured.

Hundreds of mourners attended last night's outdoor prayer service in Solingen, DPA reported.

Many brought flowers and candles to the service and placed stuffed toys and letters at the crime scene as a sign of solidarity.

„The city today is a different place compared to yesterday,” said Michael Mohr, the Catholic priest who is the city's deacon.

Ilka Werner, the leader of the local Protestant church, emphasized the need for the community to be supported.

The service was accompanied by soft music.
