London police report three stabbed and 90 arrested in the first day of the carnival in Notting Hill, BNR reported.

The traditional carnival in the British capital, which has been held since the 1960s, will continue today, as Monday is a holiday on the Island and is the culmination of the event with the participation of all age groups.

In light of the recent social unrest, the police deployed 7,000 of their own to guard the event. The first day, which generally passes more gently because it is dedicated to children and families, however, did not pass without incidents.

A 32-year-old woman is in a life-threatening condition after sustaining stab wounds. A 29-year-old man is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, pending an update on the condition of another 24-year-old man. Police said they would use greater search powers given to them in a bid to prevent further violence. 90 people were arrested, 18 of them for possession of weapons.

By comparison, last year there were 8 stabbings and 275 arrests. It is estimated that this year around 1 million people will take part in the carnival.
