Ryabkov: Russia plans changes to its nuclear doctrine in response to Western actions - 1

Russia will introduce amendments to its nuclear doctrine in response to the actions of the West regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Ryabkov announced, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

Ryabkov explained that the decision was “related to the course of escalation of our Western adversaries” regarding the so-called “special military operation of Russia in Ukraine“.

„As we have repeatedly said, the work is at an advanced stage and there is a clear direction for correction, which is also due to the study and analysis of the experience of the development of conflicts in recent years,” added Ryabkov, quoted by TASS.

Russia's current nuclear doctrine, established by a decree of President Vladimir Putin in 2020, envisages the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear strike by an adversary or an attack with conventional weapons that threatens the very existence of the state.

Russia, which accuses the West of using Ukraine as a proxy for war against it, has already signaled possible changes to its nuclear doctrine. According to Reuters, Ryabkov's statement is the most definitive so far from Moscow regarding upcoming changes to the strategic document.
