At least 40 people drowned in accident with a boat in a river in northwestern Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu announced, Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
The incident occurred in Zamfara state while the farmers were trying to reach their land, Tinubu said in a statement. The president promised support for the victims and ordered emergency services to assess the incident.
Yazid Abubakar, Zamfara police spokesman, told AP that the incident happened on Saturday and that five people were rescued, but 40 are still missing. It was not immediately clear how many people were on the boat when it capsized and sank.
