Guardian owner: We're in talks to sell our Sunday Observer VIDEO - 1

The owner of “Guardian“ has confirmed that it is negotiating the sale of its Sunday edition “Observer”, which is the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world, BNR reported.

Guardian Media Group has received an offer from Tortoise Media, which wants to invest around £25m over the next five years in “editorial and commercial renewal” of “Observer“.

Tortoise Media was founded five years ago by James Harding, former head of BBC News and former editor of the “Times” newspaper. Guardian Media Group is not actively trying to sell the Observer, but is exploring Tortoise Media's offer.

Founded way back in 1791 “Observer“ is the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world with a staff today of around 70 people.

„We believe unreservedly in both the print and digital future of the “Observer”, commented James Harding on his proposal. He added that George Orwell once called “The Observer” “enemy of nonsense“and his team is excited to show readers old and new that he still is.

George Orwell wrote for the paper during the Second World War and then until 1948.
