U.S. are rebuilding the air base used for the atomic bombing of Japan at the end of World War II, BILD newspaper reports, quoted by Focus.
The air base on the small Pacific island of Tinian has long been overgrown with jungle. The US Army will begin clearing and equipping the runways from January 2024. “This is how they are preparing for a possible confrontation with China”, commented BILD.
More than 20 million square meters of asphalt have already been restored, and hundreds of hectares of jungle have been cleared. The Pentagon has allocated almost half a billion dollars for this project. The airbase is being modernized as part of the Pacific Deterrence Initiative plan.
The island of Tinian played a key role for the US in World War II. American bombers take off from there and drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. China is as accessible from the island as Japan.
