Government in Caracas jumps on UN report on repression in Venezuela - 1

The Venezuelan government rejected "categorically" last night, the allegations in a UN human rights report describing repression by the rulers of the South American country against political opponents, as well as against children, after the production of the disputed presidential elections, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

A UN fact-finding mission on human rights violations presented a report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, the agency said. It says the Venezuelan state is using increasingly violent methods to crack down on dissidents after a July 28 vote contested by a number of countries in which incumbent President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner.

"The persistence of this shameful mission is a clear sign of the chaotic campaign led by the UN institutions, which are increasingly moving away from their functions and becoming an instrument of coercion and blackmail against peoples and sovereign governments," said in a statement by the government of Venezuela, quoted by Reuters.
