The co-chairman of the German Social Democratic Party (GSDP) Zaskia Esken spoke openly in support of the promotion by the GSDP of the candidacy of Chancellor Olaf Scholz for a new term in office in next year's elections, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"Olaf Scholz is our chancellor and he is the candidate for chancellor with whom we will go to the vote. There is great unity in the party on this issue,'' Esken said in an interview with the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, the text of which was obtained in advance by the DPA.

She rejected criticism of the chancellor's communication and management style. "Olaf Scholz manages in a way that is suitable for all times,", Exen pointed out.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who is far more popular than Scholz according to polls and has repeatedly been mentioned as a possible alternative for the chancellorship, was specifically praised by her for his role. Pistorius is a "wonderful minister", Esken emphasized. "He has made a name for himself with his successful work and demonstrated leadership qualities in this difficult ministry."

Esken considers it unnecessary to undertake a reorganization in the ranks of the GSDP after the resignation of the leadership of the Greens after the series of electoral defeats. At the national level, the Social Democrats are in coalition with the Greens and the liberals from the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

GSDP trailed in the polls, but still managed to beat, albeit by a narrow margin, the far-right "Alternative for Germany" at the regional parliament elections at the end of last week in the province of Brandenburg - the region around the capital Berlin.
