Target of the Israeli Air Force strike on the southern outskirts of Beirut may have been the head of Hezbollah's executive committee, Hashem Safieddin.
He is considered one of the main candidates to replace the Shiite Party Secretary General Hassan Nasrullah, who died on September 27. This was reported by Al Hadath TV channel, citing Israeli sources.
As reported by the Axios portal with reference to an Israeli official, Safiyedin was in an underground bunker at the time of the strike and his possible death has not yet been confirmed.
Safieddin is the former leader's cousin and oversees domestic political affairs. He is also part of the operational staff responsible for military operations.
Earlier, the Israeli Air Force launched more than 15 strikes on the perimeter of Beirut International Airport. The strikes were concentrated in areas where Hezbollah facilities are located and its supporters live.
