Ukraine will not renew natural gas transit contract with Russia - 1

Ukraine has no plans to renew its contract with Russia for the transit of natural gas through its territory after it expires at the end of the year. This was stated today by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, who met in Uzhhorod, in the western part of Ukraine, with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Shmigal defined as a strategic goal the suspension of the income that Moscow receives from the sale of natural gas and oil. He stressed that this would limit Russia's ability to finance its war in Ukraine.

For his part, Robert Fizzo said that during his talks with representatives of the Ukrainian government, it was confirmed that Kiev is willing to continue using its transit network for the transfer of natural gas and oil after the expiration of the contract with Russia. "This is very important news for all of us," noted the Slovak Prime Minister.

Despite Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, the transit of Russian natural gas through the territory of the country continues. Some countries of the European Union still buy blue fuel from Russia, DPA points out.

Slovak state company SPP announced earlier this month that negotiations to extend the term of transit of natural gas through the territory of Ukraine are continuing, Reuters recalls.
