Emmanuel Macron reacted to the result of the referendum on Moldova's EU membership, assuring the country of France's support for the realization of its “European destiny” and condemned the “disinformation maneuvers” around the vote, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
„The disinformation maneuvers did not shake the determination of the Moldovans, whose aspiration to join the European family turned out to be stronger”, the French president wrote in “Aix”. The President of Moldova “Maia Sandu embodies this determination. Moldova can count on our support to fulfill its European destiny”, he added, after just over 50 percent of voters voted “yes” the referendum. Sandu condemned the “intervention“ in the vote, referring to Moscow.
German Foreign Minister Analena Berbok expressed relief yesterday that the Moldovans approved, albeit by a minimal margin, the inclusion of the government's course towards the EU in the constitution, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
According to the data of the electoral authorities in Moldova, after the counting of all votes, 50.46% of Moldovans voted for the pro-European course.
Berbok called Moldova's strategy for the EU "the best guarantee for the security of the local population so that they can live in peace and freedom in the future".
Two and a half years ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin attacked not only Ukraine, but also Moldova - "in this case not with an army, but with a hybrid war," added the German foreign minister.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk praised Moldovan President Maya Sandu after the publication of the first results of the presidential elections, Polish news agency PAP reported, quoted by BTA.
„Enrage Moscow, impress Europe, save your country once again - this is Maja Sandu,” wrote the Polish Prime Minister on the "X" platform. in response to the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Moldova.
„A great leader and a brave nation”, added Tusk.
Presidential elections were held in Moldova yesterday, together with a referendum on the inclusion of EU accession in the country's constitution.
According to the results published today, the previous president Sandu takes first place with 42% of the votes. The former socialist prosecutor Alexander Stoyanoglo came in second place. Both candidates are expected to compete in the second round.
Until this morning, voters wanting EU accession written into the constitution slightly outnumbered those opposed to such a step.
Moldova received EU candidate status in June 2022. In December 2023, EU leaders approved the opening of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine.
