Russian President Vladimir Putin met yesterday evening with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in the Russian city of Kazan, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
Features were broadcast showing Putin and Guterres shaking hands.
This is the first meeting of the Russian leader with the Secretary General since April 2022.
"The Russian invasion of Ukraine" is a violation of international law, Guterres told Putin, according to a statement from Guterres' spokesman's office.
The statement also said the Secretary-General "reiterated his position that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a violation of the UN Charter and international law," calling for a "just peace" that would is consistent with the UN Charter and international law.
Guterres has also expressed his support for "freedom of navigation in the Black Sea", which is of great importance to Ukraine and to the food and energy security of the world.
"He absolutely supports negotiations on this matter,", the statement added.
Russia strongly supports the cessation of bloodshed in Gaza and calls on the parties to the conflict to show restraint, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.
„Russia's principled position is consistent and absolutely non-conjunctural in nature: we strongly support an early end to the bloodshed and the provision of humanitarian access to all those in need. We call on all countries to exercise restraint,”, Putin said, commenting on the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Putin stressed that the achievement of lasting peace in the region “is only possible through a political and diplomatic settlement on the basis of the known international legal foundations, through the international legal framework providing for the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state to coexist in peace and security with Israel”.
